AT RISK YOUTH TUTORING PROJECT

AT RISK YOUTH TUTORING PROJECT (MINESOTA AMERICORPS PROMISE FELLOW)

PLACEMENT SITE:

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide opportunities for youth to experience quality relationships and develop lifelong skills:
• Serve as a member of the Leadership Team, made up of school and community partners, aimed at increasing better communication and development of successful community-wide strategies to help bridge the achievement gap between students of color and those students from low income and middle incomes
• Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive community volunteer program for targeted youth and families
• Facilitate youth civic engagement activities with and for targeted youth
• Document key contacts and learning from program implementation and related evaluations.
Fulfill requirements and adhere to the provisions of the Minnesota AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Initiative as specified in related documents that will be provided to the Fellow.
Participate in creating an Individual Development Plan and participate in resulting development activities within AmeriCorps Promise Fellow guidelines and requirements.

ELIGIBILITY:
 18 years or older.
 A U.S. citizen or U.S. national or a lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
 Able to serve in a full time position (eg., not a full time student or working elsewhere full time).
 Interested in serving youth and community.
 Have a car.
 Knowledge of Somali or Arabic.

DESIRABILITY CHARACTERISTICS AND SKILLS:

 Associate or Bachelor degree in community or youth development, education, or related field.
 Strong oral and written communication skills.
 Volunteer experience and desire to develop a strong ethic of service.
 Experience working collaboratively with youth.
 Commitment to positive youth development.
 Able to deal effectively with multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
 Self motivated, capable of effectively working independently without daily supervision.
 Has initiative to see and follow through with “next steps” that will need to be taken.
 Able to present oneself in a highly professional manner and be an ambassador for the program.
 Must have care.
 Has knowledge of Somali or Arabic.

TERM OF SERVICE:
September 1, 2005-August 31, 2006
Promise Fellow must complete 1700 hours of service over a one year period.

PROMISE FELLOW WILL RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING:

Living Allowance-$12,000
Educational Award upon Successful Completion-$4,725

Professional Development
