The Muslim Registry
The Muslim Registry is unlikely to be labelled as a Muslim Registry. Instead the Trump Administration is likely to criminalize Muslim activities by labeling some Muslim organizations as terrorists.

How Does The Muslim Ban Work?
Trump’s first Executive Order (dated Jan 27, 2017) banning people from seven Muslim countries (popularly called Muslim Ban 1.0) had a dramatic impact upon Muslim communities domestically and abroad until it was stopped by a judge (Feb 3, 2017). Trump issued a second Executive Order (dated Mar 6, 2017) slightly narrowing the scope of the restrictions. This is popularly called the Muslim Ban 2.0

During the election, Trump repeatedly called for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. After becoming president, he realizes that an outright ban on Muslims would be illegal and unconstitutional. That’s why he keeps repeating that the travel ban is not a Muslim ban.

Unfortunately, we now anticipate a third Executive Order (Muslim Ban 3.0) that would erode the civil liberties of Muslim Americans by making false accusations of treason without providing any evidence. A new form of McCarthyism.

What would the new Executive Order Say?
Sources at the State Department say President Trump will request the State Department to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. This Executive Order and any subsequent designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization would pave the way to tarnish and even to prosecute American individuals and organizations through hearsay and innuendo.  These types of politics could have devastating consequences to Muslim Americans and further stigmatize and harm our communities. See more details here.

What is the Muslim Brotherhood?
Dr. Jonathan Brown of Georgetown University, an expert on the Islam, states: “Started in the 1920s, the Muslim Brotherhood movement sought to revive Islamic values in the family and social life of Muslims in Egypt. Akin to the Christian revival movements in America, the movement spread to many parts of the world, inspiring many individuals and groups. Muslim Brotherhood inspired groups are legitimate parts of governments in Turkey, Morocco, Kuwait and Jordan. Some MB-inspired individuals and organizations have engaged in deplorable acts of violence and held hateful beliefs, but these organizations have already been declared terrorist groups by the US.” The vast majority of Muslim Americans, just like the vast majority of all Americans, has little to no understanding of this largely Middle Eastern movement.

Impact on Muslim Americans
Anti-Muslim and alt-right groups have sought to link Americans like President Obama, former CIA Director John Brennan, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist, Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, and almost every major Muslim American institutions to the Muslim Brotherhood. Even Congressmen Keith Ellison and Andre Carson have been similarly smeared!

While these “guilt by association” tactics used to be confined to fringe groups, the Executive Order (along with a Foreign Terrorist Organization designation) would empower actors inside and outside the Trump Administration to call for terrorism-related investigations. This would stigmatize Muslim Americans and their institutions, debilitate their operations, and sow fear and confusion in order to chill free speech and financial support Muslim Americans and their institutions. We would be linked to the bogeyman of the Muslim Brotherhood in order to target our civil liberties.

In short, this would be history repeating itself. Irish-Catholics in the 19th century were linked to the Vatican by the Know Nothing Party to de-legitimize them. Successful Jewish businessmen at the start of the 20th century were linked to “international Jewry” to de-legitimize them. A new form of McCarthyism would take place unless this proposed Executive Order is vigorously resisted.

MAS: a Muslim American Institution
The Muslim American Society (MAS) is the largest Muslim grassroots organization in America. As a matter of policy, MAS has no ties to any international or foreign entity. We are a Muslim American institution that seeks to move people to strive for God-consciousness, liberty, and justice and to convey Islam with utmost clarity. MAS is funded by donations from individual members and supporters, who are US citizens or immigrants. MAS receives some foundation grants. MAS does not receive funding from any foreign governments and does not send money overseas.
